There were many changes to the new California Building Code that took effect January 1st, 2014. One change impacting operable door hardware, including panic hardware, was the new California Building Code requirement of hardware to operate with a maximum of 5 pounds of force operation. Building Code ((Sec. 11B-309.4) sites “Operable parts shall be operable with one hand and shall not require tight grasping, pinching, or twisting of the wrist. The force required to activate operable parts shall be 5 pounds maximum”. Von Duprin had the solution certified by UL to meet the building code requirements. In order to ensure compliance, they thoroughly tested the 35 exit only panic devices and other hardware for durability, use and functionality. The 35EO is available for all types of single and double doors with mullion. Mechanical and electronic options include quiet electric latch retraction, delayed and controlled egress, concealed vertical cables and security indicators. UL listed for panic exit hardware devices are ANSI A156.3 – 2014 Grade 1. In order to identify the AX device, look for the "AX" Prefix in the door schedule and/or specificatioin. In this field, look for the California Compliance note on the UL Label and the AX Device Label. Both labels can be found on the center case cover of the exit only device.
